[Mello doesn't expect forgiveness for anything he does, and typically, he doesn't seek it out, because he is entirely unrepentant about the choices he makes, which all boil down to one of two categories: something he wants to do; or something that is necessary. This is different; he didn't want Near to get hurt like this, and the alliance with the demon ended up providing no real net value.
Mello moves quickly through the door and toward the closest bedroom, but it's impossible not to notice the extra-wide berth Near gives him. Observation is still an imperative in his mind, despite the years between him and the last lessons from the House. He notes it, a fact filed away in his mind, along with a vague thought, something like Good, he should. Near isn't stupid, after all.
But that does make his words something of a surprise. Mello frowns as he tugs one sleeve of his jacket over his arm, then the other, pulls the ends of his hair out from the collar as he pulls the fabric over his shoulders. He hesitates for a fraction of a second, questioning what he's heard and the possible reasons behind it, but he doesn't look up at Near when he replies.]
