[Near is remarkably good at deflecting responsibility away from Mello when he wants to. When half of his team had been killed upon Mello obtaining the Death Note, Near had instead set the blame directly onto Light Yagami for giving up the book in the first place. Of course he understands that Mello created this situation. That isn't the point. Not this time. Because Near says so.
